John Stewart articulates the arguement for gay marriage better than I’ve seen it done before in one sitting.

I think the best line of reasoning John uses exposes the mutability of marriage throughout its history - first, during the old testament when it was polygamy being redefined to a one man/one woman property contract, to its introduction as a Holy Sacrament in the 1200s, to interacial marriage being made legal, etc.  And remember folks, homosexual coupling is just as transhistorical as marriage, and arguably predates it - so don’t give us the “older is better” argument - it don’t fly!It exposes the rhetoric that leans on history for justification that “we don’t want to redefine marriage” for what it truly is: unequal treatment and a “Me, but not you” attitude.  As has been stated over and over, if the conservative right’s focus is on the family, why not make that stabilizing option open to responsible people who have shown the want and the ability to raise a family and contribute to society?

Phew…that’s it.  And, I love you, John Stewart.  I once kinda liked you Mike Huckabee…

I heart you Jon Stewart. Could we get a semiotician to break down the word marriage for us?
