Or they are words on the air, composed of sounds and ideas - abstract, invisible, gone once they’ve been spoken - and what could be more frail than that? But some stories, small, simple ones about setting out on adventures or people doing wonders, tales of miracles and monsters, have outlasted all the people who told them, and some of them have outlasted the lands in which they were created.

The Harry Ransom Center at the University of Texas today announced that it has acquired the papers of David Foster Wallace. The collection includes “manuscript materials for Wallace’s books, stories and essays; research materials; Wallace’s college and graduate school writings; juvenilia, including poems, stories and letters; teaching materials and books.” The Center’s blog has more details.

Here’s what I don’t get, why University of Texas? Are they just the only ones who bid on it / approached his estate? Why not Amherst, Ithaca or Claremont? Either way - I’m glad his papers are getting cataloged. I would catalog those papers in a heartbeat.

Coming in just under the Oscar-wire, I just finished watching An Education, which I loved.
Also it completely solidified my newly forming girl-crush on Carey Mulligan.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had to explain to little girls, ‘Shhh, I’m in disguise!’ One time I was at an airport and I was spotted by an adorable three year old. I thought I’d ruined her life. She looked at me as if to say, ‘You’re not Gisele!’ I thought, ‘I can’t be responsible for her loss of faith,’ so I told her in my Gisele voice that I was in disguise so that Queen Narissa couldn’t find me. And she was like, ‘Oooh!’

Media aimed at the female of the species from adolescence on up hammers on a few simple messages. 1) If you’re not heterosexual — or for some other reason don’t see landing a boyfriend as your primary purpose in life — you don’t exist. 2) Landing a boyfriend is about understanding What Guys Want and doing whatever it takes to become that. 3) Keeping a boyfriend is about continuing to be What Guys Want, and if your relationship fails, it’s probably because you did something Guys Hate.
